Bacillary Dysentery (Shigellosis)
SYMPTOMS in children may include drowsiness, irritability, abnormal pain,
sudden fever and straining at stool. This will be followed within 72 hours
by diarrhea containing blood, pus and mucus. There may be 20 or more stools
per day. Symptoms for most adults include diarrhea without blood and very
little straining at stool although, in some adults there may be griping
abdominal pain that is relieved by bowel movement, the frequency of the pain
increases, stools contain pus, mucus,possibly some blood and severe diarrhea
CAUSES. Shigella bacteria produce an acute bowel infection. Transmitted by
drink or food that is contaminated by the carrier of the disease.
TREATMENT. Antibiotics and replacement of fluids may be prescribed.
